Glow Day 2024!

 GLOW DAY!!!!

Yesterday was Glow Day and we had SO. MUCH. FUN!
We started the day doing our phonics notebooks.  We started working on reading words and the kids are doing a great job and they are trying so hard!  Some friends are reading words and some friends are SOOOOO close! We did phonics as normal, except instead of using regular paper, our phonics was copied on NEON paper so it glowed so bright!

After that we read the book Creepy Pair of Underwear... this is a fabulous series if you haven't ever read them, you should!  The kids LOVE them!  After reading the story, the kids made their very own pair of Creepy Underwear to display in the classroom!

We then did some dot painting and cup stacking.  Mr. Buttenhoff, our assistant superintendent, came in and spent some time with us during this time.  He had so much fun with the kids!

We also played a couple rounds of Alphabet Bingo before it was time to go to recess and lunch!

The afternoon was full of centers!  The first round of centers were literacy centers!

The first center was write the room.  The kids used highlighters and clipboards to find glowing words around the classroom.  They then sounded out the words and wrote them on their paper.

The second center was working on letter recognition and letter sounds.  My daughter Whitney came to help.  She called out a letter sound and then the kids found the letter and hit it with a sticky hand! Lots of laughter could be heard at this station.

The next station was working on matching uppercase and lowercase letters! My mom got to help out at this station!

The next station was the sensory big.  I used neon paint to create rice that glows under the black lights.  The students drew a word out of the word bin and sounded it out.  Then they found the letters in the bin to make the word.

The last center was a fine motor/word center.  They took a word card and then used the beads to fill in the words.

After literacy centers we jumped right into math centers!
The first math center was a fine motor center where they had to put as many glowing rubber bands onto a black Popsicle stick as possible.

The second math center was playing memory where they were matching the number cards with the correct number of dots.

The next math center was roll and color.  Some friends rolled two dice and added them together and some friends just rolled one dice.  It really depended on what they were ready for! Once they rolled their dice, they colored in the spot on their sheet that corresponded with their roll.

The last math center was counting to 20.  They chose a card and then filled in the ten frame with the corresponding number of beads.

Finally we made GLOW VOLCANOES!  This is probably the best part of the day!  It is so cool to watch!

Here are a few more pictures from our super, epic, and awesome day!

Glow Day!

Today the kids walked in to the best surprise ever!!

GLOW DAY!

Our classroom was lit with black lights and all of our learning was black
light reactive today!  They started with a Glow Day coloring sheet that they got to color with neon crayons!

After their coloring sheet we did some literacy learning centers!

Write the room was a lot of fun.  There were glowing words all over our classroom that they had to find and then write on their paper!

They also got to sound out and rainbow write some CVC words!

Another station was a fine motor activity where they got to paint using Q-tips!

We had a glowing sensory bin that had letters that could be used to make words!

They also used pony beads to make words, which works on fine motor, visual/spatial awareness and reading words!

We read the story Creepy Pair of Underwear which is a fun book to read, but is even more awesome in the black lights!  The kids got to make their very own pair of creepy underwear!  SO many giggles!

After lunch we did some math centers!  The kids had so much fun!

They rolled dice and colored the numbers. Some friends rolled one dice and worked on subitizing to 6 and some friends rolled two dice and practiced adding to 12.

Students worked on fine motor skills by putting small rubber bands around popsicle sticks painted black!

They used playfoam to practice making numbers and counting!

Cup Stacking was a fan favorite today!  They were able to work together to get their towers SOOO high!

We ended the day with some free play/art time and VOLCANOES!

We had a special helper today... My mom!

The kids had a great time today and I am so thankful that you all share your kiddos with me every day!

I look forward to many more fun learning days with your kiddo throughout the year!

GLOW DAY!!!

This week we had our very first theme day this year!  We had GLOW DAY!  We had so much fun!  We spend the day doing all sorts of learning activities that glow under the black lights.

We started the day working in our phonics journal.  The kids got to use neon crayons and highlighters to write their words and their making words letter were on neon paper.

After phonic we started literacy learning centers.  Students got to learn at different glowing centers.  They got to make words in the neon rice bin, write the room using highlighters, learned about the sight word you, played tic tac toe, and worked on building fine motor skills by placing glow beads on decodable words.

In the afternoon we read the book Creepy Underwear which is always a class favorite!  It is especially cool, because the illustrations glow in the black light!

We transitioned into math centers where kids worked together to build towers and count how many cups high their towers were and they completed many center activities to build number sense.

We ended the day with free play and glowing volcanoes!

We had a great glow day!

GLOW DAY!!!

Today when the students arrived they noticed something a little strange about our classroom.  There was neon stars EVERYWHERE!  They got to play with their busy box at their seat until it was time for the pledge and attendance.  After attendance we took a bathroom break.  Mrs. Laue was very sneaky and I turned on the black lights and turned OFF the regular lights.  The kids were SO excited walking into the classroom and were so excited to see what parts of their outfits glowed.

Glow day is a lot of fun, but there is still work to be done!  We got started making words right away. First the kids had to add the beginning sound to the rime and then write the words.  They all got a special invisible ink pen, a highlighter, and neon crayons to use.

We did some rainbow writing and a sight word search next!
Making words with glow in the dark stars was also a HUGE hit!  We were working on words in the -ad family today!
Days like today, it is sometimes fun to just sit back and listen to the excitement and the giggles coming from the students.

We got to have a little fun today also!  We read the book A Creepy Pair of Underwear (it GLOWS under the black light!) and then the kids got to create their own creepy pair of underwear!

For math, we did some rainbow writing with our numbers.  We also played a dice game where students roll either one or two dice and color the number that they get.  The kids love this game and playing it with highlighters and neon crayons was an added bonus!  We also had some fun counting and sorting beads onto pipe cleaners!

Glow Volcanoes are always a HUGE hit!  All of my in person kiddos got to make a glow volcano today!

My remote learners also got to join in on the fun today!  Instead of doing their normal Thursday work, they got an at home GLOW DAY kit with some similar activities and some different activities!

Overall, we had an AWESOME glow day!!!
